The HEL was established in 1965 for the purpose of uniting the
members of the electrical trade into an organization which could
promote the industry and influence its direction. In 1972, Houston
Lighting & Power Company took an interest in helping the fledgling
group gain more strength and purpose, and with this valuable
assistance, HEL began to grow.
Now a strong and
active organization of business men and women throughout the
Metropolitan Houston area whose time and interests are invested in the
electrical industry. The HEL also
sponsors the biennial Southwest Electrical Exposition in conjunction
with Houston Lighting & Power Company. This trade show is one of the
largest in the nation and offers electrical power manufacturers an
excellent showcase for their apparatus, equipment, products &
services.
HELSF (Houston
Electrical League Scholarship Fund) is a non-profit affiliation
organized to support the area youth, regularly providing up to $60,000 per year in
scholarships to Junior & Senior level college students. In addition,
the HELSF sponsors a summer intern program, whereby eligible students
work for HEL member companies, thereby providing valuable work
experience to their educational resumes. The HEL is also a strong
supporter of the
Professional Association of Industrial Distribution (PAID), a Texas
A&M Student Association. PAID is an organizational platform for
promoting student involvement with Industrial Distribution faculty and
industry personnel. Student members organize and publicize business
meetings, power lunches, social events, field trips, publications, and
more to provide opportunities outside the classroom -- opportunities
that enhance career skills. Please review the PAID webpage on this
site. simply click the Paid link above for a letter from Paid to the
Membership of the HEL.
As a industry
member, you are the people for whom this organization was formed and
the one who has the most to gain from its activities. If you are not
already involved in the Houston Electrical League, you are cordially
invited to participate.
We hold a number of
key events during the year in order to raise funds and provide
networking opportunities for our membership. These are great
events, and have a tradition of being of significant value to the
membership and goals of the HEL Scholarship Fund.
